PLCB Awards Grant to Aid Robert Morris University in the Fight Against Underage Alcohol Use

Harrisburg – Sen. John Pippy (R-37) and Rep. Mark Mustio (R-44) today announced that the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board has awarded Robert Morris University a grant of $10,440 to support initiatives aimed at preventing underage and dangerous alcohol use.

The grant will support a wide variety of activities on campus, including: the development of strategies to alter the environment surrounding students and discourage drinking, law enforcement training and other prevention programs.

This year, the Liquor Control Board's Bureau of Alcohol Education received the highest number of applications in PLCB history, indicating that Pennsylvanians are eager to reduce and prevent the unsafe use of alcohol and underage alcohol use.  Robert Morris University was one of 73 entities out of 128 applicants chosen for the competitive 2009-10 grant cycle.

"It is crucial that our community is aware of the dangers of underage alcohol consumption," said Senator Pippy. "This grant will help the RMU community by implementing proven methods to prevent underage drinking and support law enforcement efforts to investigate and reduce such incidents.  We are grateful for this grant from the PLCB."

"One of the advantages of controlled alcohol sales is the ability to restrict underage drinkers' accessibility to liquor stores. The fact that Pennsylvania is a controlled state for hard liquor does give the PLCB the opportunity to further reduce access by minors," said Representative Mustio.
