For Immediate Release Statement from Senator Pippy on Governor's Proposed 2009-2010 State BudgetHarrisburg – State Sen. John Pippy (R-37) released the following statement regarding today's address by Gov. Rendell, in which the governor proposed a $28.9 billion 2009-10 state budget: "This is an extremely difficult budget process, and I have significant concerns about the Governor's proposal which will be fully vetted during Senate Appropriations Committee public hearings. "The Administration is projecting a $2.3 billion shortfall in revenue, however this budget still includes a $1.26 billion – 4.6 percent – increase in spending and presupposes several tax increases. It is incumbent that every potential revenue increase be scrutinized for both short- and long-term impact. "With the economy struggling and jobs in jeopardy, this would be the worst time to hit families and job creators with increased taxes. Controlling spending and making state government live within its means is the proper approach. With state revenues down so drastically, government must tighten its belt. "It is important to note that this proposed spending plan is a starting point and the final version will reflect a set of priorities developed by all legislators and the Governor's office. "Working together, the Legislature and the Administration can reach agreement on a state budget that funds necessary programs, but acknowledges that the severe drop in revenues requires that every dollar spent be justified."
