SENATE COMMITTEE TO HOLD HEARING IN PHILADELPHIA ON DISTRESSED PA
CITIES, ACT 47
Wednesday, July 25
Harrisburg
– The Senate Urban Affairs and Housing Committee, chaired by Sen. John
Pippy (R-Allegheny) and Sen. Shirley Kitchen (R-Philadelphia), will hold
a public hearing in Philadelphia next week on the fiscal health of
Pennsylvania's cities, Act 47, the Municipalities Financial Recovery Act
and the tools necessary for cities to attain fiscal health.
The hearing will be
held Wednesday, July 25, beginning at 9 a.m., in the City Council
Caucus Room, Philadelphia City Hall.
Those scheduled to testify include representatives of the Philadelphia
Mayor's Office, the Pennsylvania Intergovernmental Cooperation
Authority, the Economy League of Greater Philadelphia, the Greater
Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and others.
The hearing is
among a series the committee is holding on cities of the First, Second
and Third class, as well as Act 47, the 20-year-old state law designed
to help stabilize the finances of distressed cities.
A recent study
cited shortcomings in Act 47 and the need to
examine challenges faced by Pennsylvania's cities.
The
committee held a previous hearing in Harrisburg and will be scheduling
one for Pittsburgh in September.
