IMMEDIATE RELEASE Pippy Urges Use of Bike Helmets to Reduce Risk of Child Injuries Groups can apply for grants to help get the word out. Harrisburg – State Sen. John Pippy (R-37) is reminding parents that the use of bicycle helmets by children can greatly reduce their risk of injury. State law requires bicycle helmets to be worn by riders under age 12. "Brain injuries account for 43 percent of all deaths to young children," said Pippy. "Properly wearing a bike helmet can reduce such injuries by up to 85 percent. In addition, wearing a helmet makes its easier for others to see the rider." Children under 18 account for well over half of bike-related emergency room admissions, he added. Despite the benefits and the legal requirement, helmet use remains stubbornly low, said the senator. He applauded the efforts the Pittsburgh Helmet Coalition and parents such as Peter Hughes of Point Breeze. Hughes' daughter Claire sustained head trauma four years ago when she fell off a scooter. She survived after a week-long hospital stay, which included an induced coma. "Children's hospital of Pittsburgh has reported an increase in the number children being treated for bike-related accidents. Unfortunately, there are still too many children riding bikes while not wearing a helmet and we have to keep getting the word out," said Pippy. The Pennsylvania Department of Health, through the Pennsylvania SAFE KIDS Coalition, is making grants available for projects designed to increase bicycle safety and reduce bicycle-related injuries among children. Groups have until June 24 to apply. For more information, visit www.pasafekids.org and click on "available grants." "With schools letting out for the summer, more children will be using their bicycles," said Pippy. "I urge parents to insist their child wear a helmet. And adult riders, too, should take the same precaution and be good role models." ### CONTACT: Matt Campion (412) 571-3822
