Pennsylvania Department of Health Flu Vaccine Update

In early November, the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that approximately 343,000 additional flu vaccines would be available to Pennsylvania.  In response to this news, the Department, in cooperation with the Department's of Aging and Public Welfare, conducted a statewide survey of health care facilities and providers to determine the actual flu vaccine need across the Commonwealth.  The survey was distributed to the following groups of healthcare providers:  hospitals, nursing homes, home health agencies, county health departments, federally qualified health centers, Area Agencies on Aging (AAA), personal care homes, and renal dialysis centers because these serve the highest concentration of high-risk individuals.

The accuracy and timeliness of this project would not have been possible without the full cooperation of all four provider associations.  We would like to thank our partners in the associations for all the work they accomplished within the very tight due dates we needed.

Based on information received from the surveys, the Department expects to fill approximately 80 percent of the total vaccine requests from healthcare provides throughout the Commonwealth. Of the expected 343,000 doses, 61 percent will be apportioned in December and the remaining 39 percent will be apportioned in January.

In order to provide accurate and timely information, the Pennsylvania Department of Health has published a database that lists the number of flu vaccines that facilities, by county will receive.  To determine where vaccines are being distributed in your county, please access www.health.state.pa.us/ApportionedVaccine. It is important to note that this is a preliminary database and will periodically be updated each week as the orders are filled.

For those individuals who do not have direct access to health care providers, the Department recommends contacting their local AAA or calling the Department's toll-free number at 1-877-PAHEALTH.
