Turnpike Commission readies plans for Route 51-I 376 connector
Moving a key link in
the Mon-Fayette Expressway project to final design represents a
significant milestone for local commuters, businesses and residents,
according to Senator John Pippy, 37th District.
The Pennsylvania
Turnpike Commission recently announced plans to begin final design of a
24-mile connector route from Route 51 in Jefferson Hills to Interstate
376.
"This is a major
announcement for the community," said Senator Pippy, whose 37th
Senatorial District includes the Borough of Jefferson Hills. "The
Mon-Fayette Expressway will be a catalyst for economic development and
job creation throughout the region. I applaud the Turnpike Commission
for working to develop this connector and for expeditiously completing
the sections of the highway that are already open."
Ultimately, the
Mon/Fayette system will measure about 70 miles, from Interstate 68 near
Morgantown, W.Va., through the Uniontown and Brownsville areas and the
Monongahela River Valley to Interstate 376 in Pittsburgh and
Monroeville. Roughly half of the 70 miles, including about 10 miles
built by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, is completed.
"The Expressway will
cut traffic congestion and improve mobility in our region, resulting in
a more efficient movement of goods and services," said Senator Pippy.
"Accessibility to job centers, educational facilities and social
services will be improved. Emergency response times also will be
reduced."
