Mustio and Pippy Commend Senator Specter for Visiting 911th Airlift Wing

PITTSBURGH—With the 2005 Base and Realignment Closure (BRAC) process only a few weeks away, Representative Mark Mustio (R-Allegheny) and Senator John Pippy (R-Allegheny) expressed their optimism over U.S. Senator Arlen Specter's visit to the 911th United States Air Force Reserve Airlift Wing today.

"With nearly 1,500 recession-proof jobs and more than $17 million in government contracts at stake, Senator Specter could not have picked a better time to visit one of the Greater Pittsburgh area's most important military installations," said Mustio. "Even more importantly, his visit today shows we are making significant progress in our efforts to let Governor Rendell and our congressional delegation know how much our military installations mean to Southwestern Pennsylvania and our national defense."

In late June, Mustio and Pippy mailed out a petition to nearly 20,000 residents asking for their help to strengthen Pittsburgh's regional military installations. Petitions were also placed on their web sites at www.repmustio.com and www.senatorpippy.com  These petitions were then delivered to the governor and Pennsylvania's congressional delegation.

"Pennsylvania has lost 16,000 jobs and over $800 million through four previous rounds of BRAC closures," said Pippy. "With the stakes this high we need to continue to work together to protect our region's military installations, highlight their accomplishments and look for other ways to expand their role in keeping America's armed forces the best prepared and the best equipped in the world."

According to Mustio and Pippy, the Greater Pittsburgh area's four military installations and the additional military personnel associated with the three university ROTC Units contribute more than $215 million to both the local and state economies through payroll outlays and government contracts. Petitions are still being accepted at www.repmustio.com  and www.senatorpippy.com
