Senator Pippy Calls for State Aid
for Ivan Recovery
Offers Assistance in County Property Reassessments
Citing the widespread and extensive devastation
caused by Hurricane Ivan, state Senator John Pippy
called on Governor Ed Rendell to assist Allegheny
County in expediting a reassessment effort to reflect
losses sustained by homeowners and small business
owners.
"I believe it is important that we are
proactive in assisting and encouraging property owners
to undertake the reassessment process quickly,"
Senator Pippy wrote in an October 6 letter to Governor
Rendell. "Realizing that this expense was unexpected,
I respectfully request that funding to cover the costs
of administering the reassessment effort be included
as part of the relief package that will be distributed
to Allegheny County."
Senator Pippy also called on Governor Rendell to
use the state's existing economic funding programs to
help areas that were designated as disaster areas as a
result of the flooding.
In a separate letter from October 6, Senator Pippy
wrote to Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato to
offer his assistance as the County seeks to adjust
property assessments for those affected by the
flooding. "This devastation has obviously impacted the
values of the properties and the assessment should
reflect any change in value," Senator Pippy wrote.
"Realizing that the County did not expect the type of
dilemma that the storm caused, I would again like to
offer my support as the County works toward
reassessments for these properties and would welcome
the opportunity to meet with you to discuss a
solution."
