Airport must rise beyond US Airways layoffs

$150 million investment intended to protect, create jobs

One day after US Airways announced plans to cut hundreds of jobs at Pittsburgh International Airport, a $150 million state investment in the airport is now more vital to the economic stability of the region, according to state Senator John Pippy, R-37th District and state Representative Mark Mustio, R-44th District.

The state money is part of an economic development fund established by Act 71 of 2004 – the Pennsylvania Gaming Act, which was signed into law earlier this year.

"One of the key elements of the statewide economic development fund created by Act 71 is a $150 million allocation to reduce the debt at the airport," Senator Pippy said. "This investment would provide a tremendous boost for the airport. By reducing the debt burden, costs-per-passenger can be cut and the airport will be in a better position to attract other air carriers should US Airways curtail its operations in Pittsburgh.

Representative Mustio added that the state is also providing millions of dollars to develop several Allegheny County Airport Authority owned-properties including $7.5 million to develop 100 acres of land in the Clinton Industrial Park, near the Pittsburgh International Airport.

"Developing those properties will also provide relief for the airport and help to reduce the current debt burden," Representative Mustio said. "In addition, these projects will also boost our local economy through the creation of new job opportunities."

Both legislators agreed that the state and community must work to offset the job losses at US Airways.

"This basically is a jobs issue, now as we feel the impact of US Airways' restructuring and into the future as we work to maintain the airport's important role in our regional economy," said Senator Pippy.

"Stabilizing the economic health of the airport must be a top priority as we continue striving to promote economic development and job creation," Representative Mustio said.

As a former member of the Allegheny County Airport Authority, Senator Pippy recognizes the relationship between the airport and the community. He aggressively promoted important initiatives for the airport corridor including the funding of Industry Drive, the Air Cargo Interchange, and the Findlay Connector

"The airport is a basic and essential component of our regional economy and its future is directly tied into that of US Airways," Senator Pippy said. "The loss of jobs at US Airways will be a major hit on our local economy and it will affect many families. We must be committed in our efforts to promote the airport and to retain US Airways and the jobs it supports in our region."
