Homeland Security:  ALEC Calls on State Legislators to Get Involved In Their Communities' Emergency Preparedness Plans

GOVERNMENT LEADERS NEED TO PREPARE FOR CRISIS IN ORDER TO RESPOND EFFECTIVELY

(Washington, DC)  As the third anniversary of the horrific terrorist attacks of 9-11 approaches, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) joins forces with the Department of Homeland Security and other concerned organizations to highlight the importance of individual emergency preparedness. The National Preparedness Month Coalition is designed to encourage Americans to prepare themselves and their loved ones for any possible crisis situations.  Throughout the month of September, the coalition members have coordinated hundreds of activities to enhance the importance of emergency planning.

In this effort to increase public awareness on the need to plan for emergency situations, ALEC calls upon state legislators to become more involved in their local first responders' crisis plans.

" It is extremely important for government leaders to be knowledgeable about the policies, procedures and resources in their own backyards.  It should be every state legislator's duty to be ready for an emergency, and to ensure that the members of their community have a well-prepared strategy and understand the tactics involved in developing and executing an individual emergency plan," said Duane Parde, ALEC's Executive Director.

As state legislatures and first responders around the country continue to develop Homeland Security policies and procedures, State Senator John Pippy of Pennsylvania, Chairman of ALEC's Homeland Security Working Group, notes; "All citizens should know what the role of government will be during a crisis and, more importantly, what the government expects of them. Preparing now for different terrorist scenarios may be the difference between a crisis and a disaster. A prepared community, is a hardened target and less vulnerable to terrorist attacks. In a time of uncertainty and chaos, citizens will be able to assist each other as our rapid responders focus on immediate community needs."

National Preparedness Month is here. Being prepared is as easy as taking four simple steps:  get an emergency kit; make a family communications plan, keep 72 hours of family supplies on hand, and learn about what types of emergencies can happen in your area.  Visit www.ready.gov for more information and be ready.

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is the nation's largest nonpartisan, individual membership organization of state legislators, with over 2,400 legislator members from all fifty states, and 99 alumni members serving in the U.S. Congress.
