Mustio Salutes Pippy With House Citation Honoring His Distinguished
Service in Operation Iraqi Freedom
HARRISBURG—Rep. Mark Mustio (R-Allegheny) presented Sen. John Pippy
(R-Allegheny) with a citation honoring his distinguished service in Iraq
today during a special ceremony on the House floor.
"It is a great honor and privilege that I have the opportunity to
recognize my predecessor in the State House for his extraordinary
dedication and leadership in Operation Iraqi Freedom," said Mustio. "Our
friend Senator Pippy has served not only in the state House and now the
Senate but as a captain in the United States Army Reserves. He is a public
representative of the thousands that have put their lives on the line for
our liberty and freedom."
A 1992 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point,
Pippy served in the Army from 1992 to 1995. Since 1995 he has been a
member of the United States Army Reserve assigned to the 99th Regional
Support Group headquartered in Moon Township, Pennsylvania.
In November 2001, Pippy assumed command of the 332nd Engineer Company
at the rank of captain. His reserve unit was called to active duty in
February 2003 and deployed to assist with Operation Iraqi Freedom shortly
after the special Senate election. While operating in a designated hostile
fire combat zone, Pippy led his company to assist in building hundreds of
miles of roads in Iraq and Kuwait.
"To its great credit and in recognition of its exemplary work, his unit
received the Army Award for Maintenance Excellence in the Army reserve,
and Senator Pippy was awarded the Bronze Star Medal by the United States
Army," said Mustio. "We are thankful for the safe return of Senator Pippy
and the 332nd Engineering Company under his command. It has been said,
'the most important single influence in the life of a person is another
person … who is worthy of emulation.' All those that have served and are
currently serving are worthy of that emulation. Thank you captain, for
your service, and it is with gratitude and respect for your service to our
country in the name of peace and freedom that the House of Representatives
presents you with this citation.
